In other news I have finished the long book I was reading, it was over 550 pages. It was pretty engaging though, it was the Little Friend by Donna Tartt, author of the Secret History which is also very good. I most strongly recommend them both, they are worth the length. I am now reading the Unicorn by Iris Murdoch who is a very cool lady indeed. I studied some of her philosophy in year twelve, now I'm sampling her literature, she has written a lot of novels so I have a lot to read if I like it, and I think I will. I might watch the film Iris with Judi Dench and Kate Winslet soon.

This is an old cemetery in the heart of Auckland, we went there basically as soon as we got there because it was right near where we got off the sky bus to meet our friend. It was pretty cool although it also seemed to be part of an area where a lot of suspicious types hung out, and dare I say it at risk of confusing any foreign readership but a bit a bit "derro"

A taste of the interior

Last year I went to a wonderful event run by underground cinema. It was 1930s aristocracy themed the Melbourne Victorian mansion Rippon Lea. It was renovated in the 20s or so and a deco ballroom and pool area was added, in short an absolutely perfect location. The movie shown was fittingly Gosford Park.

What made it an amazing evening was the addition of a murder mystery game at the beggining, except in this one you could go around the house and interview the suspects who were all quite convincing actors. I wore an original 30s dress I got ages ago but had never actually worn. I also wore a fur coat. Maybe I will post proper photos of that dress later to show. I also spent a very long time attemtping to do my hair. I think it turned out reasonably. I'm only sad I missed the more recent one which was Hillbilly themed! These photos all belong to the underground cinema, they are all from their flickr.

I've been trying to get my friends to go to Rippon Lea for a picnic for about a year now! The gardens are lovely, they're quite large and there's a sort of cave and a multi-story rotunda. I went there and a lot of places like that a fair bit with my parents when I was younger. It would be a lovely place to get married.

Yours truly

Well, well, well. It has been a while blogger. But, I have been spontaneously inspired to return after almost a year of nothing. I have a bit of material now after a year of not using anything for anything so it's time for me to get reacquainted. I feel I want to change my name and possibly URL. I'm just not that keen on it anymore. There may be a bit of retrospective blogging ahead.

This year I resolve to firstly and most immediately clean my room. It's vile at the moment. In a broader outlook I want to study harder, read more, sew more, draw more and be organised. We'll see how I go with all of that.

Last year was an interesting one, I competed my first year of uni and have decided to do a double major in history and philosophy while also studying french. Many of my friends took gap years and traveled overseas, one yet to return, I met new people, went to New Zealand (there's a trill-million photos and finally the best thing is probably that I got a kitten. His name is Leo, short for Leonardo as in DiCaprio. My sister named him. That's a good place to start.

I've been looking through the ol' photo albums lately and dug out this family holiday to Beechworth. It was a pretty little cottage with a lovely garden so I thought I'd share. My little sis can't have been more than 2 or 3 so this was a fair while ago. I think my overalls are pretty cool though! I also discovered a couple of pictures from a trip to hanging rock - so I'll post those soon!

I think I might have jinxed myself with my arrogant remarks about how mild the summer has been this year, because lo and behold, its been hot hot hot these past few days! Not fun. It seems summer has arrived after what was a pretty considerable delay. I'm honestly not sure how friends, and my sister, survived the big day out (music festival here). I passed today sprawled under the air conditioner watching the Two Towers. But, thank the lord the cool change came through a few hours ago and its quite cool now.

Nothing beats climbing a tree! This was a really really good tree for climbing as well, an opportunity we couldn't pass up. Things are also pretty peachy at the moment because the australian open is on, I'm going again tomorrow too! Exciting times! January is tennis month in my household.

In other news I received a first round offer to the university of my choice, and am desperately trying to figure out what classes to take! It's exactly one month till orientation week, scary!

School is finally finished, and I'm finally away from it all. No more high-school, no more studying, so here begins the rest of life.

For the moment, at least, things have become a lot simpler.

Exam Time!

Wow, I just did my first VCE examination. It was English, we had to write three essays in three hours. Rather grueling, as all of this year really has been, but I survived! Hooray! The reason I've not been posting so frequently is exams pretty much, but that will all be over soon! It's all very strange, finishing school after years and years. And six years at this school, at the start everyone was still short, chubby and wide-eyed! It's actually a little surreal. The last day of official classes certainly was, and believe it or not I actually was not stressed or nervous about the exam that a whole year of work comes down to! Explain that! I was stressed earlier in the year, stressed last year just thinking about the exam and today...rien! no nervous breakdowns...panic attacks... It's not as if I was so prepared I had nothing to worry about - believe me I wasn't! But there you go...

I'm quite overwhelmed by school at the moment...there is simply too much to worry about! Lets dwell on happier times in the recent past! This was a fancy-dress picnic with a fairy-tale or story book theme, I was Anne of Green Gables, and two people were Little Red Riding Hood!

However in typical Melbourne fashion, it was ended by an unexpected downpour! On the note of weather, its quite cold today! It's about 8 degrees at the moment, which is pretty cold by Australian standards at least!

1. What never fails to cheer you up?

Harry Potter, always ensues instant joy and happiness! Sometimes we just need pure escapism...and also deers, they're so dear! and puns and alliterations actually!

2. If you could live one day of your life over again what would it be?

Probably any day at all from the time before I was in year twelve, the most horrifically stressful of years!

3. What do you like best about yourself?

As much as I don't like having red hair at times, and don't like the ridiculously sensitive skin that goes along with it, I am often glad to have red hair because it makes me a little different. I think we humans always like to think ourselves a little bit special, individual, even if we're much like everyone else. I also think that I think an awful lot about an awful lot of things...this too can be a negative, but at the same I wouldn't part with the quality.

4. What would you change about yourself?

Everything, and yet probably not very much if that makes a scrap of sense. I would like to be less reserved, and I can be quite reserved at times...I suppose I'd like to be more charismatic really, and wittier and cleverer. After all, "wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure".

5. What have you enjoyed most about blogging?

The reason I began blogging is from a love of beauty, so being able to express or share whatever I see in my path that is beautiful or intriguing, as well as expressing a little of myself, has been a rewarding, and aesthetically rewarding experience.

6. Who or what is your ultimate source of inspiration?

All beauty everywhere to be particular, I can't say anything much in particular is the ultimate source of inspiration! Lately though, I've been inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites (especially Rossetti), John Keats, the glorious display of architecture and landscape that can be glimpsed in Le Tour De France coverage, and Hamlet (which I am studying at the moment).

7. If you could be anywhere in the world where would you be?

Perhaps amongst rolling hills, and ruined castles in green green Ireland. Anywhere in Europe would suffice though!

8. Who would you invite to your ideal dinner party?

Oscar Wilde, Oscar Wilde, Oscar Wilde, J.K. Rowling, Alfred Hitchcock, Marie Antoinette, John Keats, Robin Hood, Grace Kelly, and Friedrich Nietzsche (even though he would probably be a bit of a downer)...I could add more but it would be a very large inner party!

I recently attended a masquerade, nobody in fact took a picture of me but they are a fascinating concept...I love nothing more than a little mystery and a little fantasy even if the mystery is just mystery itself with little beneath it...Wilde's Lady Alroy, the "sphinx without a secret" comes to mind. What is a masquerade but "a mania for mystery" when there is really nothing there at all?

As a side-note, I refer to "The Sphinx Without a Secret" which appeared in "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Short Stories", a very mysterious, intriguing, and oddly humerous collection...

It was my mother's birthday on Monday, so I naturally drew her a card. Drawings never turn out quite as well after being scanned but nevertheless it shall be shared. Admittedly, it's been a little while since the last post but I really do have a lot of educational pressure to contend with presently.

Also, I feel I should welcome Autumn officially, perhaps I'm a little late, but I find Autumn never feels like Autumn until a good way in. At least in Melbourne it doesn't. Those not from Melbourne should know that everyone here is as a rule, obsessed with the weather! Talking about the weather here is not awkward small talk but an engaging, passionate topic of conversation. Well, perhaps I exaggerate a little...but we certainly deserve our reputation for interesting weather.I never mentioned, but in the recent storm, I actually had my very own bedroom window smashed by a hale-stone! Those were very very large, hale-stones! It was, I must admit, quite an exhilarating weather experience!

A little while ago I attended a murder mystery party that was set in the 1940's. I pin-curled my hair for the first time, and I was quite pleased with the result. I followed the very useful instructions from this video if anyone is interested in giving it a try. My dress is vintage, the hat is new and belongs to my friend Erinna who is also pictured, and that's my vintage 40s jacket she's wearing as well as my scarf! She actually turned out to be the muderer, she does look somewhat suspicious....Murder Mysteries are very good fun by the way, if anyone was thinking about hosting one!

Oh dear! It's been a while, having just started my final (and most demanding!) year of secondary school, my brain has been quite invaded by study related thoughts (probably the result of an excess amount of humanities subjects!) yet here I am again!

For something more interesting, I made it to the Independent show for Melbourne Fashion Week (and at no cost thanks to my dear friend Sabina). I very much enjoyed it, many things were very nice but I particularly enjoyed Magdalena Velevska's collection as a highlight. The dress pictured on the right stood out for me - loved the drape, the shoulder and the texture. And when seeing a lot of clothes go past you in a short space of time it's not easy to remember everything either!

I still feel great excitement and am prone to irrational joyous emotions at this time of year even though I've managed to suppress it a little since the days of my early childhood when things were generally out of control. We went around to my aunt and uncle's place and a lot of old photos were dug up including this early Christmas. Although it seems that they're poor tree is a little bit overwhelmed. I am personally very disapproving of fake trees I should add, a fake tree doesn't even come close to the loveliness of a real tree!

On Sunday afternoon I fell down the rabbit-hole to find myself at a most delightful tea party. Naturally, it was a costume party so I was the white queen. I borrowed a past ballet costume from the 'white rabbit'. There was croquet played in a way we will refer to as 'stylistic', mountains of food and towers of tea cups...which lasted a good few minutes before being knocked over...replaced, then sent tumbling again. In short, a recipe for a wonderful day!

I always thought this quite beautiful photography, there's so much life in this little picture you could easily imagine being there. My grandmother is the lady wearing the dark coat standing next to the bride and one of the little flower girls is my mother's older sister, Francis and the other her cousin. But such a joyous image can resonate a lot of other emotions; it really strikes me to see family assembled like this long ago when I think of what's become of all those people. The blushing bride is my great aunt, who I know was called Lucy, but died before I was born, another great aunt, Irene, can be seen behind my grandmother showering the bride in confetti, she now suffers from dementia and of course my much loved grandmother who passed away when I was in grade four.

A Poscard From The Past

Little postcards, notes, old photographs and the like from other times never cease to capture my imagination, there's always a mysterious person behind the relics they left behind, with their own stories you'll never hear, all we have of their life is a little note on the back of a pretty postcard or a an inscription on a gift they received from an aunt. So we're left to wonder.

I wonder who Miss Margaret who received this was; what colour hair did she have? Maybe she liked to draw? I do know that whoever sent her this had handwriting that I cannot decipher very easily. And that the postal stamp says it was posted in the August of 1911 in Bluemont, Virginia.

It's also curious that it ended up in Australia and eventually, in my possession.

The Delight Of A Suprise

My parents were out of town for the weekend and I consequently had to find accommodation and when I returned to the house on Sunday what did I find waiting for me?

A fabulous vintage pattern of course! I adore completely unsuspected surprises, particularly pleasant ones. Although it may be a little large for me I might be able to alter just a little as I'd very much like to make it. Although I'm still very pleased. Although what fabric I would use I'm not yet sure of.

On the weekend I also saw the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which I thought was quite brilliant. It seems to be the result of an imagination gone wild if not utterly mad. Just the kind of film I like in fact. It was also very sad knowing it's the last time we'll ever see Heath Ledger on the big screen but he did a fantastic job. I should also mention that Lily Cole was very good, and naturally very stunning, don't we all wish we were as beautiful as she...

Long Summer Days In Springtime

It's quite definitely still spring yet it seems that summer has come out in full force to torment us much earlier than was expected of her. Let it be known that I am not summer's greatest ambassador although it has some virtues like the frequency of ice-cream and the lack of schooling and a heightened appreciation of a cool drink. However it also gives me great sadness, firstly because it can be very hot, and secondly because of all the flowers that are scorched and wilted on warm day. If were a flower I wouldn't even bother blooming in summer, it would be a very unpleasant death I imagine.

As well as being too hot I've also had the displeasure of examinations which as I'm sure anyone would know are nasty and unpleasant. Yet as you can observe, I did by some happy mistake find myself not studying at one point and in the city instead.

The dress I'm wearing is a particular favourite although I never really wear it, mostly because it is such a favourite, as well as being very old. When I acquired it about a year a go I was told it was Edwardian or there abouts but a girl's dress. I am not very knowledgeable on what children or teenagers wore at this time but it seemed odd that a girl's dress fit me, I figure it is really for a teenager, obviously not a little girl. I then came upon this 1905 image at some point which fit with the notion, I'm not sure her age but the hem on her dress seems comparable to mine. Also, as you cannot see the details of my beloved frock in the top image I included another for I believe that everything is in the details.

This is in fact, probably the most useful and amusing thing I've ever heard. It can arm those preoccupied by material things such as clothing like myself against those not blessed with an understanding on such matters who sometimes insist it's a waste of time/money or superficial. (Although admittedly not executed with perfect penmanship by yours truly.)

And on the topic of clothing and all important material matters; I'll share my most recent acquisition via eBay. I'd never purchased any vintage/antique clothing on eBay before now so it was a little distressing but all ended well, I'm quite pleased with what I bought. Despite being Edwardian it's in very strong wearable condition, the only problem really, is a couple of buttons which I was fully aware of and which I can deal with. It's really very lovely so here it is;

Recent times have been blurs of practice essays and revision and research assignments...Sometimes I think I wouldn't mind being very small again, when the most trivial things had the gravest importance and great worldly matters were far beyond my reach or concern. I remember quite distinctly how I would be entirely thoroughly concerned by the game I might have been playing or would take up an often slightly left of centre character (namely Bill Badger of Rupert Bear or dalmatian of sorts) and never falter from it. Today was the much anticipated Melbourne Cup, many people wear quite atrocious things but some nice things appear too, I liked the outfit above for example. I did not attend myself however, for reasons made obvious when you consider the crowds;

But I was however fortunate enough to attend the Cup Eve Reception at Melbourne's Government House, which is a most spectacular building, and as it's not often open to the public (and apparently when it is there's apparently very long lines to get in there) I feel doubly fortunate to have viewed it with the added extra of drinks and food being served. I can now also claim to have shaken hands with the premier of Victoria!

Sunday

Today is Sunday for me although the blog tells me it is not so...I'm not sure if you can change the time zone or anything but never matter and never mind. All is currently well but tomorrow I must go to school, that is the bad thing about Sundays as I'm sure you all know; Mondays are always looming over you...especially when you have large amounts of homework. But above is a delightful image to lighten the mood. With a most fabulous coat and an even more fabulous dog!

A Day In Pompeii and Persuasion

It would seem I haven't posted since Thursday. This is probably because that sister of mine hasn't been off the computer since, her routine is as follows; get home from school, eat, then stay on facebook until she goes to bed, such is the wonderful life she leads! Anyway, onto more exciting things than that, this weekend I saw the exhibition at Melbourne Museum; A Day In Pompeii. It was very good, and very interesting. I was rather impressed by the frescoes and sculptures which were very sophisticated (unlike much later medieval art).

I also saw the "Persuasion" exhibition on the fashion's from Jane Austen's day, for the second time infact, but with the parents (I'd seen it already with friends). There are some simply stunning gowns as well as a quantity of fashion illustrations on display. And having just read Emma I was quite in the mood for it as well.

I also bought the Odyssey from the new set of Penguin books today, and it's quite lovely, I convinced my parents to pay for it on academic grounds as I am continuing classics next year. Isn't it just lovely? It's actually much more green in the flesh, it looks blue here but it's a lie.

Aren't these photos just wonderful? I felt quite obliged to share them! I love the colour scheme of the outfit up top, the shirt in particular. But even better still, if you look closely you'll see some of these ladies have freckles, it never fails to make me feel much happier when I see pretty people who have freckles!

Another little picture to be shared...I should also clarify that coloured pencils are evil so many pictures I draw stay black and white.

I also feel I should disclose a great tragedy I suffered this weekend. I very nearly came into possession of a very fantastic vintage boater hat that was utterly perfect but unfortunately it was not to be as somebody else bought it first...I am currently in mourning but I just think I might be able to recover...someday...

I thought I'd like to share a couple of images from the family "archives" as I take much pleasure in old photographs. These feature my Aunt who had curly red hair, as a very little girl in the second picture and older but still very young in the one just above...with a cow...and her cousin.

In other news I finished Great Expectations, I actually did so one week ago but neglected to update my "currently reading" section. I enjoyed it immensely and would definitely recommend it although one might wonder if Charles Dickens really needs a lot of recommending but I shall do so nevertheless...

My Sister

We'll I'm back from holidays but malheureusement also back to school! It was rather warm, I went to beach, went horse riding and took a lot of photographs. We had a swell view from our accommodation which let us have full advantage of lovely sunsets and cloud formations as well as some scary smoke as seen below.

In my interstate travelling I also picked up this delightful book of stories and poems for girls from the 1920s in an antique (of which I fully intend to share more of shortly, it may be little delicate for scanning so I might take photos instead).

It rained and rained and rained all day today but tomorrow morning, I'm trading wet weather for the sunny beaches up north of Noosa, Queensland. Unfortunately I most likely won't have access to a computer so if I don't post till next weekend that's why. But for now, enjoy these most delightful seaside images from yesteryear.

Adventure II : Montsalvlat

Although it was cold and wet today we braved the elements and payed a visit to the magical Montsalvat, which is a very beautiful artist's colony on Melbourne's outer with an abundance of peacocks and beautiful historical buildings. And we even did manage a picnic in spite of the weather!

By the way I am in fact wearing a Ravenclaw scarf in the picture above, it's important to show my house pride at all times you see.

Isn't this a great photo? It's my great grandmother with my grandmother lurking in the background. Although I sadly never knew her, (as you might guess from her age in a rather old photograph), I quite admire her style from the pictures I've seen of her, the sunglasses, the dress, the head-scarf... all very chic despite her actually being a grandmother at the time.

I just bought these today although I'd been eyeing them off for a week or so, they're from the 1920s and I think there's a danger of me actually trying to marry them I' m so in love with these shoes! Are they not the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?

I simply adore the 1920s, it's probably my favourite era but as you can guess, it's difficult to source affordable, wearable items from that time, especially shoes as they're often small or far too expensive or damaged. The best bit is that they were meant to be $195 but the owner of my favourite little vintage store gave them to me for just $100, she said she was happy to see them go to a good home, especially as they fit and all.

Warmer weather is here and this is what I wore this today, I'm wearing not just a dress but a dress and a funny lace top thing from around 1910 or there about (in my unprofessional opinion that is) that is actually one of my favourite pieces,

The lavender shoes are a favourite too although I'm not exactly sure how old they are (If anybody more knowledgeable has an idea, please share because I just don't know!). And that sparkly necklace belonged to my great aunt and is from the 60s.

When I went for a walk today I picked some flowers which found their way to my bedside table, I really don't think there's a better decoration than a vase of fresh flowers!

Film to See : Notorious

I only just saw this for the first time on Saturday, I'd been wanting to see it for a while as quite the Hitchcock fan and was by no means disappointed. It was the first collaboration of Edith Head and Hitchcock with the glorious results seen in Ingrid Bergman's wardrobe! It doesn’t get much better than impeccably dressed secret agents!

Ruby's Birthday Party

On Saturday, which was very warm and springy, my friend Ruby (at the bottom) had her 'Master Chef' themed birthday party, we all pulled ingredients of a hat and we had to make something, guess what complicated dish I made? Wedges! Ruby made beautiful food (above) that actually incorporated frozen peas, you couldn't taste them but they were in there, and she looked lovely too (as did everybody else of course).

Toni Frissell's photos are so beautiful I felt I ought to share some. She's particularly famous for her coverage of WWII as well as her fashion photography - she started working for vogue in the 30's and her name is actually Antoinette Frissell Bacon which is a mighty good one, what more could you ask for?

The Young Victoria

I saw 'The Young Victoria' Friday and it was stunningly, amazingly beautiful and I'd say was one of the best films I've seen this year. The costumes were delightful, I especially loved Prince Albert's tweed pants. There are hardly any films set in that era so it was good to finally see it well represented in such a fantastic film.
